5 Tips for the Summer Interns!

Recently, the blog has been on a hiatus because of my busy schedule. I've been busy with my summer internship; I currently intern for my Mayor at the Department of Cultural Affairs. It is interesting being a seasonal because I learned so much about the work that my city puts into planning events for the public. This is my second summer internship (my first was last summer with Fidelity Investments). I feel very ready to go into the workforce because of my weekly training last year and workshops; I am very excited to share these tips with you today!

Dear Future Roomies

Dear Future Roomies,
In less than a month, we will be moving in together. We'll surely bump into each other as we unload boxes of clothes and random memorabilia that we just can not leave at home. We'll move furniture around over and over again until we are too tired to determine which layout is most roomy, and just accept this space as our home. We'll try the best to make our dorm the "cutest room on the floor." (Even though our furniture is Ikea, our aspirations are Crate and Barrel.) We'll talk, and we'll be shy even though we have been texting for months. We'll get homesick (I'll be there for you). We'll learn Math 155 together (possibly fail together) and we'll each discover our newfound freedom and independence. We'll learn how to do well without studying too much. We'll talk all night about random subjects until we realize that we are screwed because we have an 8:55 class. We'll eat together at the cafeteria because we are too lazy to cook or go out. We'll complain about cafeteria food together. We'll take so many pictures together; Kim Kardashian's selfie book has nothing on us. We'll go on adventures together. We'll get lost in the city, and we will feel terrified because the metro closes at night. We'll learn to give each other space. We'll suffocate each other sometimes. We'll binge watch Netflix and grow unhealthily obsessed with a show. We'll find our favorite spot to study on campus. We'll fight because one of us forgot to clean up a mess or ate all the candy even though there was a note claiming it. We'll make up because it is awkward to live with someone you are upset with, and because we love each other too much to fight anyways. We'll laugh, we'll learn, and we'll grow together. We'll always be there for each other, from hard classes to hard days. Best of all, we'll be the first best friends we each make on campus.
Sincerely Yours,
Your very excited Froomie

Life as a Vegetarian

Recently, I've made a huge lifestyle change; I decided to go veggie! I decided to change my life style because I wanted to do it for my health, religion, and love of animals. I've never related the meat I ate to an animal. I always thought of a hamburger as a hamburger, and not a cow. One day, on a run, I saw a family of baby ducks. That night I was supposed to have duck for dinner with my family. However, I knew I couldn't because it was very difficult for me to eat the meal after understanding that it is an animal. I've done some research before officially calling myself a vegetarian, and I started off slow. I had certain days where I could "cheat" on this vegetarian diet if I felt that I needed to. However, I did not find meat meals as appealing as I once did.  The change was hard at first because everyone in my house and my boyfriend love meat. I respect their opinion because I myself loved bacon. I couldn't find myself to try to convert someone into vegetarianism just because it is something I feel strongly about; people should eat what they feel comfortable eating. Haha, who am I to tell you what to eat?
When I told people of my lifestyle change, many were very supportive and it made the transaction feel easier. People said I was "cool" for doing this and it made me feel very good about my choice. However, someone did tell me I was going to "starve and want to slit my wrists because you won't find food." That comment shocked me because it was so ignorant and close minded. There are so many foods that do not contain meat, and I personally do not believe that I have to eat meat just because it is readily available and easier to access sometimes (for example when going out). Because of my diet, I find myself to be very creative when cooking at home. (I replace the meats in my favorite meals with vegetables or grains.) I also have to be aware of the proteins and vitamins that I have to provide in my diet since I cut out meat (Beans are great for protein and veggie burgers are so convenient). When I go out with my friends, I find myself ordering some variation of potato. Seriously, I never understood the importance of fries until I became a vegetarian.
Overall, I love being a vegetarian. This is the best decision I have ever made in my life. I've been happier, healthier, and more active since this change. I've lost 15 pounds by just cutting out meat, and I am more motivated to become more active too! I'm full of energy and I feel so light. All my meals have been guilt free (except when I binge eat fries) and I feel very excited for this change. Thanks for reading! :)

Laptop Stickers!

Hey guys! During a Best Buy sale, I bought a new MacBook for college for only $750! I was so excited because it is my first real laptop, and I was so excited to finally decorate it and bring it with me to school. One of the first things I did was figure out how to decorate it. I know I really wanted to put stickers on it to reflect my personality and truly make my laptop mine. But which ones? The first ever sticker I put on it was the Vineyard Vines Whale. I think it is so cute and preppy. The second sticker I put on it was the Fraternity Collection Bow Sticker I had to peel from my notebook. The edges are a bit frayed but I'll figure out out to fix that later!

I really wanted an "American University" sticker to show some school pride. However, school pride was hard to show when the stickers at the bookstore is $6 plus $5.50 shipping! My friend told me that "Sticker Paper" exists so I went on to staples to try it out! I bought a pack of Avery Shipping Labels (Full sheet sticker paper). After I bought the paper, I went online and searched up my images that I wanted to make a sticker. I copied and pasted the images onto a blank word document and then printed them out on the sticker paper! It was that easy! After they printed, I covered the surface of the stickers with clear masking tape to give it a shiny/waterproof exterior. I cut out the stickers after wards then placed them on my Mac. The monograms I bought on eBay from this great seller who did a "buy 2 get 1 free" deal. I placed one monogram on the outside of my laptop and I placed the other on the inside next to my touchpad. The last monogram I am saving :)

Here is the link to the sticker paper I bought: (They are a bit pricey but worth it!)

I am going to be making stickers for everything! From notes to phonescases to cute labels! Thanks for all the compliments I got on my Facebook/email! Have fun making stickers!

AU Bound!

The last few weeks have been stressful and suspenseful as I wait for college decisions to come out. After all the waiting, I am happy to announce that I have been accepted to my dream school- American University! More good news: I have a yearly $56k scholarship that covers the tuition and room/board!

Honestly, I feel so blessed to be accepted, and with such a generous amount of money. I feel relieved that all my hard work at school and in my community has been reflected in my application. American is very highly ranked, its atmosphere is perfect for me, and the campus is a beautiful place I'd love to call home for the next four years. It still feels so surreal that I got accepted, I remember crying so much. I am so happy that my parents are so proud of me.

Obviously, I committed to the school a few days after I had found out. I am so excited to finally start school in the fall. American University is in Washington DC, and it is about four hours away from NYC, which makes me a little bit nervous because I've never really left NYC. However, I know this change will help challenge and teach me so much and help me explore and meet new great people! After all, isn't that what college is about? :)

This Thursday, I will have my first overnight college visit at American University. My family, boyfriend, and I will be driving down super early so we can explore the city together before I leave for my visit! As of now, I am still planning the trip and what to pack (???help please???). I will keep all of you guys updated on my trip!

New York, New Art

"An artist must be free to choose what he does, certainly, but he must also never be afraid to do what he might choose.~Langston Hughes

Displaying IMG_3923.JPG
I sold my first piece of art! A few weeks ago, there was a concert named "New York, New York." For that concert, I painted a New York themed poster for them to hang up. After the concert, I received my poster back and it was once again in my shelf of art. (In my art class, everyone had shelves to place their art once it has been completed,or finished with use.) I planned to keep the poster in my dorm room in the fall because it was something I was extremely proud of, but I did not think anyone else would be interested in my poster. I've given away many pieces of my art in the past, but I'd never think to slap a price on my art. However, yesterday, when I was in art class some people mentioned that someone was very interested in buying my poster! I thought it was a prank because it was just a poster! Nothing special like a canvas or sculpture! But, yes, someone was actually interested in my "New York, New York" concert poster! After some thinking, I sold it! My art did make me happy, but I am even happier knowing that it can also make other people happy.

Fresh Paint

“Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.”

Color will usher your look into any season, be it light pastels for spring, or warm shades for the fall, so give neutral nails a festive shade of the season. I'm a little rebel, a rule breaker, and I say, "To it with the seasons!"

Forget warm, comforting shades of oranges and browns for the fall. Forget cute little painted pumpkin nails.

I'm going for a fresh paint of spring.

Fresh Paint

1. Green Thumb

"Green is the prime color of the world, and that from which its loveliness arises."

This minty green is a subtle, livelier alternative to the darker hues of green.

2. Pretty in Pink

"I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles."
-Audrey Hepburn

The color pink reflects light, and so it makes your hands look younger!

3. The Teal Deal

"It is only after years of preparation that the young artist should touch color - not color used descriptively, that is, but as a means of personal expression."

It's a bold and daring color, teal me about it!

4. Red Hot

“Red", I write "is the color of life. It's blood, passion, rage. It's menstrual flow and after birth. Beginnings and violent end. Red is the color of love. Beating hearts and hungry lips. Roses, Valentines, cherries. Red is the color of shame. Crimson cheeks and spilled blood. Broken hearts, opened veins. A burning desire to return to white.”
― Mary Hogan, Pretty Face

Traffic stopping shades such as this looks amazing on anyone! Especially short, rounded nails!

FUN FACT: Red is a man's favorite color on a women's nails.

5. Orange Juice (My most favorite drink ever!)

"There is no blue without yellow and without orange."
Vincent Van Gogh

This is a fresh color that works best on warm, olive, skin tones.

Have fun painting! What are your favorite hues?

Dress Color Debate: Why do we see what we see?

What color is this dress? Black and blue or white and gold? The dress color debate has been one of the trending topics that inspire conversations during the last few days. I myself see gold and white, but my friends swear it's black and blue. The original dress is black and blue. So why do different people see this dress differently? After talking to my boyfriend, he explained to me what he's thought about the subject and what he learned about it from NPR.

People see the dress differently because it is an optical allusion. The picture of the dress was taken with a combination off two different lights: artificial and natural light. The human brain, throughout evolution, is intended to filter out light during different times of day. We understand color the way that we do because of this feature; we are able to differentiate colors with natural and artificial light. For instance, we know that the school bus is yellow even during different times of the day and sources of light. However, in this picture of the dress, there was a combination of natural and artificial light. The human brain was manipulated into filtering out one or the other saturator. This causes the brain to desaturate certain colours allowing for some people to see the dress in white/gold and some others to see blue/black.

What color do you see the dress in?

101 in 1001

Last year, I created a list of 101 things that I wanted to complete in 1001 days. It has been a little more than a year and I've completed 99% of that list! I work alot faster than I thought! Therefore, I am creating a newer, better, and more adventurous list! I am so excited to do this again! Thanks again to Mackenzie from MackenzieHoran.com for inspiring me to even start this in the first place!
What is a "101 Things in 1001 Days" list? This is a little more than a "To Do" list and a little less that a "Bucket" list. Simply it is a list of 101 things that one could complete in 1001 days, roughly 2.75 years. Stylish Friends: Gustaf!

 Displaying photo 1.PNG

Today I am super excited to feature one of my friends. Meet Gustaf, he's really sweet. We met awhile back, and I was really impressed with how well he dresses up. Over Instagram, we bonded and talked more about fashion. He inspires me to present myself in a more fashionable way, and make my own fashion choices to express myself. I am very excited to have Gustaf post today on his outfit and presentation of himself!

Hi! I’m Gustaf. I am student living in Stockholm, Sweden. If you would ask me: “describe yourself with three words”, I’d say: “I am ambitious, charming and a true fashionisto”. My life reflects in what I’m wearing. I love to combine different garments and create “the perfect look for the perfect occasion”. People might say that’s shallow and weird, but I think otherwise. For me, a perfect combination says more about a person than their spoken word (at the first sight). I don’t look at people thinking: “Oh God, what is he/she wearing”? I just simply think that people with garment matching skills are very concerned about themselves as well as the outside. At least, that’s what I like to think. Anyways, I like people that care what they look like and how they want others to see them.
Displaying photo 2.PNG

The image above was taken at the country and I wanted to give the impression that I was on my way somewhere. Not to a specific place, just on my way. The idea is very simple. I am a “city boy” walking on a lonely country road with inspiration from the surroundings. Thus, the outfit needed to reflect this “image”.

The outfit itself is very simple. A dark washed chambray (denim) shirt underneath a wool sweater. On top, a wool blazer and finally a pair of jeans. To complete the look, I put on a pair of leather boots. There is also a weekend bag and a briefcase.

This gives the image of a well dressed “city boy” with inspiration from his surroundings. A look that I like to call, “a dressed up casual look with influences”.

My life is very hectic at the moment, but other than that it’s great. I want to inspire people with my garment combinations and I am very interested in learning new things. I love to get to know people and get new friends. I am very sociable, which makes my interest in style and fashion even better. I listen and learn. So, that’s me!

// Gustaf
